Coldstream Tree Removal and Acreage Clearing

Tree removal in Coldstream, BC is mostly acreage work for Kelowna Expert Tree Service. Our crew does single-tree removal, hazard and dead tree removal, emergency storm removal, rigged takedowns over outbuildings, crown reduction and limbing, land clearing, brush clearing, forestry mulching and wildfire fuel reduction. We buck usable wood into firewood and leave it stacked, and stump grinding can be added to a removal on request.

Coldstream wraps around the north end of Kalamalka Lake, directly southeast of Vernon and about 52 km or 53 minutes from Kelowna. It is a mix of suburban streets on Middleton Mountain, rural acreage and ranch land, with Coldstream Ranch still running cattle since 1863. Big lots mean bigger jobs: rows of fir along a driveway, pine crowding a barn, brush creeping into pasture. Our prices for tree removal, Coldstream acreages included, are set on site after a walk of the property.

Acreage Tree Work in Coldstream's Dry Douglas-Fir Country

Most of Coldstream sits in the Very Dry Hot Interior Douglas-fir zone, known to foresters as IDF xh1. The forests are uneven-aged Douglas-fir, and the lower slopes carry open stands of ponderosa pine and Douglas-fir, which wildfire planners class as fuel type C7. Left alone for decades, those stands fill in with young fir that crowds the big trees, carries fire into their crowns and shades out pasture.

It is dry country. The driest year on record had 242 mm of precipitation and the wettest had 633 mm. Douglas-fir beetle outbreaks tend to follow drought, and western pine beetle hits stressed ponderosa, so on acreage we often find a cluster of red or grey trees in one corner of the property. Those are best taken down together in one visit, while the wood is still sound and safe to fell.

On bigger parcels a forestry mulching machine clears underbrush and small trees in one pass and leaves the mulch on the ground, with no piles to burn or haul. Published 2026 ranges run $400 to $800 per acre for mulching, up to $2,000 for dense growth, and $500 to $6,000 or more per acre for land clearing depending on how heavy the timber is. Scale is not a problem for us: one of our crews cleared 12 acres of ponderosa pine in a single week, so a few hectares of Coldstream pasture edge is a normal booking.

Is a Permit Needed to Cut Trees in Coldstream?

Possibly. Coldstream has a tree bylaw, Tree Management Bylaw No. 1198 from 1995, which defines protected trees and regulates cutting and removal. Its full text is not posted online, so we cannot say from here if your tree is covered. Before any sizable removal we confirm with the District office which trees on your property the bylaw protects.

Wildfire work gets more room. The District's Official Community Plan, Bylaw No. 1673 from 2015, exempts land alterations done for wildfire response from development permits. The 2024 Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan goes further and suggests updating the tree bylaw with FireSmart principles, and even banning new conifer planting within 10 m of homes in favour of deciduous trees.

None of that changes covenants on title, creek setbacks or what a neighbour can expect along a shared fence line. When a tree sits near a property line or a watercourse, we walk it with you and point out what needs checking before we put a price in writing.

Wildfire History and FireSmart Help in Coldstream

Coldstream had two close calls in 2021. The Clerke Road fire near Highway 97, south of Okanagan College, reached about 43 ha and led to evacuation orders for 40 homes. The 35 ha Becker Lake fire put Coldstream Estates on alert the same season. Most fires that have started in the area since 1950 were human-caused.

Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park, all 3,218 ha of it, borders the District on the west side. Its largest recent fire was only 4.6 ha in 2022, but homes along the park edge sit right at the interface. Those are the lots where we pull conifers out of the first 10 m, raise limbs to 2 m and open the crowns to 3 m apart further out.

The District runs free FireSmart home assessments through its FireSmart Coordinator, plus Farm and Ranch assessments for larger properties, and its wildfire plan lists 38 recommendations. We found no cash rebate, so the assessment report is the best starting point. Bring it to us and we will quote the tree and brush items on it. Our FireSmart wildfire mitigation page explains each zone.

Coldstream Tree Removal FAQs

How much does acreage clearing cost in Coldstream?

Published 2026 ranges put land clearing at $500 to $1,500 per acre for light brush, $1,500 to $3,500 for medium growth and $3,500 to $6,000 or more for heavy timber. Forestry mulching runs $400 to $800 per acre in most cover. We walk the parcel and price the whole job in writing.

Does Coldstream have a tree bylaw?

Yes. Tree Management Bylaw No. 1198, 1995 defines protected trees and regulates cutting and removal in the District. The bylaw text is not published online, so we check with the District before larger removals. Work done for wildfire response is exempt from development permits under the 2015 OCP.

How do I get a FireSmart assessment in Coldstream?

Contact the District's FireSmart Coordinator. Coldstream offers free home assessments and separate Farm and Ranch assessments for larger properties. The report lists what to remove or prune in each zone around your buildings, and we can quote and carry out the tree and brush items on it.

What happens to the wood and brush on a Coldstream job?

Brush goes through our chipper or under the mulcher, and the chips can stay on site or be hauled. Trunk wood is cut to stove length and stacked where you want it, or taken away. On acreage, mulching leaves the material on the ground, so nothing needs to be piled or burned.

Do you work in other rural areas near Kelowna?

Yes. Rural and acreage clearing is a big part of our work, from the North Okanagan down to the hills east of Kelowna. Most of those jobs mix single hazard trees with brush clearing, forestry mulching and FireSmart thinning on the same property.

We also proudly serve Joe Rich, the forested valley along Highway 33, where FireSmart fuel reduction on acreage is the main job.

Can you take out a whole patch of beetle-killed trees?

Yes, and it is usually cheaper as one job. Mountain pine beetle mostly runs on a one-year life cycle, and western pine beetle attacks ponderosa over 15 cm across, so one dead tree often means more nearby. We fell the red and grey trees together, check the green ones around them and chip or mulch the slash.
