Storm, Fallen and Hazard Trees, Handled Fast

Kelowna Expert Tree Service handles emergency tree removal across Kelowna: trees and limbs down on roofs, cars and fences, split trunks still standing, root-plate failures after a soaked spring, and dead pines that started dropping limbs in the wind. We stabilise the tree first, then cut it free in sections with rigging so the load comes off the structure slowly instead of all at once. Kelowna Expert Tree Service provides emergency and hazard tree removal to Kelowna and surrounding Okanagan communities, including West Kelowna, Lake Country, Peachland and Vernon.

Not every hazard is an emergency. A tree with a fresh lean, a crack at a co-dominant union or pitch tubes running up the trunk is a hazard that should come down on a planned date before the next storm makes the call. We assess both the same way: the defect, the target underneath, and the safest way to get the tree down. For emergency tree removal, Kelowna homeowners can call or text photos and get an answer the same day.

Types of Emergency Tree Removal We Handle

Each one needs a different plan. Here is what we see most often after an Okanagan windstorm or a wet spring.

  • Tree on a House or Roof

We tie off the tree before cutting, then remove it top down so weight leaves the roof in small pieces. Cutting a loaded trunk at the base can spring it sideways, which is how a dented roof becomes a broken one. Once it is off we leave the roof clear for a tarp or a roofer.

  • Fallen Tree Removal

A tree already on the ground across a driveway, fence or lawn is safer but still loaded. Trunks pinned under their own limbs can roll or jump when cut. We relieve the tension in the right order, buck the trunk, chip the crown and haul or stack the wood.

  • Storm-Damaged Trees Still Standing

A torn limb hanging in the crown, a split leader or a trunk with a fresh crack is often more dangerous than a tree on the ground. We climb or use rigging to take the hanger down first, then decide whether the rest of the tree can be pruned or needs to come out.

  • Dead Tree Removal

Dead conifers dry out and turn brittle within a season or two, and dead limbs can drop on a calm day. Beetle-killed ponderosa and lodgepole pine are the most common in Kelowna. We remove dead trees on a planned date, before they become a storm call.

  • Leaning and Uprooted Trees

A lean the tree has always had is usually fine. A new lean with lifted soil or cracked roots on the far side is not. Wet ground after snowmelt and shallow-rooted spruce and cottonwood are the usual cause. These come down quickly because the root plate can let go at any time.

  • Trees Near Power Lines After a Storm

If a tree is on or touching a line, stay 10 m away, treat the line as live and call FortisBC first. Their crews make the line safe. Once the utility has cleared it, we remove the rest of the tree from your yard, including the part sitting on your fence or roof.

How Do You Know If a Tree Is a Hazard?

A tree is a hazard when it has a defect that could make it fail and something valuable it could hit: the house, a car, a play area, a neighbour's garage. Look for a split trunk, a new lean with lifted soil, dead or hanging limbs, fungal conks or mushrooms at the base, and pitch tubes from bark beetles.

Arborists assess risk the same way: the likelihood of failure, the likelihood of hitting the target, and the consequences. ISA's Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) is the standard method. If you are in Kelowna and the tree sits in a riparian area or on a slope of 30% or more, Bylaw No. 8041 lets a dangerous tree come down before the permit is issued, as long as it is reported to the City immediately.

  • Cracks or splits through the trunk or a major union
  • A lean that is new or getting worse, with heaved soil
  • Dead limbs over the roof, driveway or play area
  • Mushrooms, conks or soft wood at the root flare
  • Pitch tubes and a crown fading from green to red

How Much Does Emergency Tree Removal Cost in Kelowna?

Emergency tree removal in Kelowna usually costs 30% to 100% more than the same job booked ahead, and most residential emergency jobs run $1,500 to $6,500 in 2026. The premium pays for after-hours crews and the extra rigging needed to cut a loaded tree off a roof without causing more damage.

Many home insurance policies cover removal when a tree damages a covered structure. Photos before work starts and an itemised invoice make that claim easier, and we provide both.

What to Do Before We Arrive

Your safety comes before the tree. These steps keep everyone clear and make the insurance claim simpler.

Move People Away From the Tree

Clear the rooms under any part of the trunk or crown and keep kids and pets out of the drop zone. A tree resting on a roof can shift as the wood settles.

Stay 10 m From Downed Lines

Treat every wire as live, even if the power seems off. Call FortisBC to report it and keep everyone at least 10 m away until their crew says it is safe.

Photograph the Damage

Take wide shots and close-ups from a safe spot before anything moves: the tree, the roof, the fence and any vehicles. Then call your insurer and us.

Do Not Cut Loaded Wood Yourself

Trunks and limbs pinned under weight store energy that releases when cut. Leave it for a crew with rigging and the right cutting order.

Our Emergency Tree Removal Process

  1. Call and Send Photos

Tell us where the tree is and what it is resting on. Photos by text let us bring the right gear on the first trip.

  2. Make It Safe

We tape off the area, check for lines, and secure the tree so it cannot shift further. Insurance photos are taken now.

  3. Remove and Clean Up

The tree comes off in controlled sections, brush goes through the chipper, and the wood is hauled or stacked as you prefer.

Emergency Tree Removal FAQs

Do you do emergency tree removal on weekends?

Yes, for real emergencies. A tree on a house, blocking the only driveway or hanging over a play area gets a response outside normal hours. Planned hazard removals are booked on weekdays. Call rather than using the form when it is urgent, and send photos by text so we know what to bring.

Will my home insurance pay for emergency tree removal?

Often, when a tree damages a covered structure such as your house, garage or fence. Policies usually do not pay to remove a tree that fell without hitting anything. Read your policy or call your insurer, and keep the photos and our itemised invoice for the claim.

Do I need a permit to remove a dangerous tree in Kelowna?

Most Kelowna yards need no permit at all. In the bylaw areas, which are riparian areas and slopes of 30% or more, Bylaw No. 8041 lets a dangerous tree come down before a permit is issued if it is reported to the City immediately. We help you make that report.

What happens to a tree that falls on a power line?

Stay at least 10 m away and call FortisBC. Only utility crews or certified utility arborists may work on trees touching energized lines under WorkSafeBC rules. After the line is safe, we remove the rest of the tree from your property and clean up.

Can you remove a tree that is still standing but cracked?

Yes, and it is often more urgent than a tree already on the ground. A crack through the trunk or a major union can fail without warning. We take hanging or cracked sections down first with rigging, then decide whether the rest can be saved or should be removed.

How fast can you get to a fallen tree in Kelowna?

For a tree on a structure we aim to make the site safe the same day or the next morning, depending on the time of the call and how many trees came down in the storm. Fallen trees on lawns or fences with no further risk are booked into the next open slot.
