Should I Prune the Tree or Remove It?
Prune when the trunk and root flare are sound and the problem is in the crown: deadwood, a few broken limbs, or branches over the roof. Remove when the trunk is split or hollow, the lean is getting worse, the roots are lifting, or bark beetles have killed the tree. Pruning usually costs a third of a removal.
Prune When
- Deadwood or storm-broken limbs only
- Branches rub the roof or reach the lines
- The crown is too dense for wind and light
Remove When
- The trunk is split, hollow or cankered
- The lean is new or getting worse
- Pitch tubes and a red crown mean beetle kill
