Tree Removal in Glenmore, Kelowna
Spruce, maples and pines in Glenmore Valley backyards, plus hillside lots in Wilden and on Dilworth Mountain. Removals, pruning, lot clearing and FireSmart work.Glenmore Tree Removal & Tree Service
Tree removal in Glenmore, Kelowna is a regular job for Kelowna Expert Tree Service: blue spruce grown too big for the front yard, Norway maples reaching over the roof, dead pines along the back fence and limbs broken in a windstorm. We do full removals, sectional dismantling, trimming and crown reduction, emergency calls, lot clearing, brush clearing and FireSmart fuel reduction, and we grind the stump if you add it to the removal.
Glenmore fills the Glenmore Valley north of downtown, about 6.8 km and 10 minutes from City Hall. Over the past two decades it has grown from a small rural suburb into large neighbourhoods with their own schools and a commercial hub. Most houses sit on the flat valley bottom, while Wilden and other newer areas are being built into the hills and Dilworth Mountain forms the eastern heights. For tree removal, Glenmore lots split into two kinds: flat valley-floor yards and hillside lots higher up.

Two Glenmores: Flat Yards and Hillside Lots
On the valley floor, tree work looks like any established suburb. Shade trees and conifers planted when the houses went in are now tall enough to touch roofs, eaves and service wires. These lots sit outside the slope and riparian areas, so Tree Protection Bylaw No. 8041 rarely applies, and the hard part is access: narrow side yards, fences and no room for the chipper.
Up the hill the rules change. Wilden and the newer streets climb into the mountains at the valley's edge, and Dilworth Mountain, just over 2,000 feet and joined to Knox Mountain, has been built out with suburban homes. Where a lot reaches a 30% grade inside a Natural Environment/Hazardous Condition DP Area, any tree 100 mm or wider at 1 m needs a $50 permit before it comes out.
On those hillside lots we rig pieces uphill or across the grade instead of dropping them toward the house, and the truck stays on the street. Bylaw 8041 also counts driving over a protected tree's root zone, or changing the grade around it, as damage. Anyone landscaping a new hillside yard around existing trees should know that before the excavator arrives.
What Happened in Glenmore During the 2023 Fire?
On the night of August 17, 2023, embers from the McDougall Creek fire crossed Okanagan Lake and lit the Walroy Lake fire on the east side, near Glenmore Highlands. The next day evacuation orders covered Clifton Road North, McKinley and the Hidden Lake and Still Pond areas, then spread to the Shayler and Glenmore Road areas.
The weather explains how fast it moved. The Kelowna area got about 10 mm of rain between July 1 and August 17 that year, its driest summer on record, and on August 17 gusts hit 50 km/h with humidity at 17%. The City of Kelowna declared a state of emergency, and 3 homes inside city limits were lost.
For Glenmore yards, the takeaway is that fire can arrive by air. Embers can fly up to two kilometres ahead of a fire front, so a cedar hedge against the siding or a pine dropping needles into the gutter becomes the weak point. Knox Mountain Park next door is 235 ha of ponderosa pine bunchgrass and dry Interior Douglas-fir, ground its own description calls fragile and dry.
Pruning and Spacing Trees Around Newer Glenmore Homes
FireSmart BC wants a non-combustible strip 1.5 m wide around the house and no conifers within 10 m. On a lot of Glenmore properties that rules out much of what was planted when the house was new. We remove the worst offenders first, usually eastern white cedar hedging and blue spruce pressed against the walls, then limb up and thin what stays.
Kelowna's bylaw makes the limbing simple. Branches within 2 m of the ground, or touching the house, can be pruned for wildfire safety without a permit, as long as the cut stays under 30% of the live canopy. Heavier cutting on a protected hillside tree is different: removing more than 25% of its live branches in 12 months counts as damage.
For new builds in Wilden and on the upper streets, we also clear lots before construction. Published 2026 Kelowna ranges put a 0.25 to 0.5 acre building lot at $1,300 to $3,900 to clear. Our land and lot clearing page explains how we leave a site ready for the excavator.
Types of Tree Service We Offer in Glenmore
Tree Trimming and Crown Reduction
Norway maples and other big shade trees cut back from roofs to strong laterals, to the ANSI A300 standard and never topped. See tree trimming and pruning.
Backyard Tree Removal Over Fences
When there is no gate wide enough for equipment, we climb and take the tree down in pieces, lowering each one on a rope so fences, sheds and hot tubs stay intact.
Spruce and Cedar Removal Near the House
Conifers inside the 10 m FireSmart zone taken out cleanly, hedges included, with the brush chipped on site.
Hillside Removals in Wilden and Dilworth
Steeper lots where we check the grade and the DP map first, then rig pieces away from the house and the slope below.
Storm Damage Cleanup
Broken limbs over a patio or a split trunk after a windstorm. If anything touches a power line, stay 10 m back and call FortisBC first. See emergency tree removal.
Aspen and Poplar Removal
Trembling aspen resprouts from its roots and black cottonwood grows fast wherever it finds water, so both outgrow a suburban yard quickly. We cut them low and deal with the suckers that follow.

Glenmore Tree Removal FAQs
Is a permit needed to cut down a backyard tree in Glenmore?
Usually not on the valley floor. Bylaw 8041 only reaches trees 100 mm or wider in riparian areas or on slopes of 30% or more inside the City's Natural Environment/Hazardous Condition DP Areas. Hillside lots in Wilden or on Dilworth Mountain can qualify, and there the permit costs $50.
How much does it cost to take down a medium tree in Glenmore?
A 20 to 50 ft tree runs $650 to $1,500 in published 2026 Kelowna ranges, and one under 20 ft runs $300 to $650. Fenced backyards with no wide gate cost more than open front yards because everything is carried out by hand. We price each job in writing after seeing it.
How close can a spruce be to my house?
FireSmart BC says no conifers, spruce included, within 10 m of the home, and nothing woody in the first 1.5 m. From 10 to 30 m, crowns should be at least 3 m apart with limbs cleared 2 m off the ground. On narrow Glenmore lots that often means a big spruce has to go.
Will aspen grow back after you cut it down?
Often, yes. Trembling aspen spreads through its roots into clonal groves that share one root system, so cutting the main trunk can send up suckers across the lawn. We cut it low and can grind the stump as part of the removal, but expect to mow off sprouts for a while.
Who handles a tree touching the service wire to my Glenmore house?
FortisBC can temporarily remove the service wire running from the pole to your house, typically at no charge, so the tree can be cut safely. WorkSafeBC sets a 3 m limit of approach for lines carrying 750 V to 75 kV, and only a certified utility arborist may work inside it. We book our part of the removal around the FortisBC visit.
Do you also work toward Lake Country?
Yes. Glenmore Road runs north from Glenmore to Lake Country, parallel to Highway 97, and we work the whole corridor, including Glenmore Highlands and the UBC Okanagan area in north Kelowna.
Our Lake Country page covers the district rules there. We also proudly serve Rutland, east across the valley.
